Common Questions
Quick answers about our automotive lift services
Automotive lift repair involves diagnosing and fixing issues with hydraulic systems, structural components, safety mechanisms, and electrical controls. Common repairs include hydraulic cylinder rebuilds, cable replacements, safety lock servicing, and power unit maintenance. A typical service call starts with a full safety inspection to identify worn components, fluid leaks, or alignment issues, followed by same-day repairs whenever possible to minimize downtime.
Lifts should be inspected annually by a qualified technician, with monthly operator checks between professional inspections. Annual inspections cover structural integrity, hydraulic system performance, safety lock function, cable condition, and electrical controls. High-use commercial lifts in busy San Diego County shops may benefit from semi-annual inspections to catch wear before it causes downtime.
2-post lifts use swing arms to lift vehicles from frame contact points, leaving wheels free for tire and brake work. 4-post lifts support the vehicle on drive-on ramps, ideal for long-term storage, undercarriage access, and oil changes. For home garages in Oceanside and North County, 2-post lifts save floor space, while 4-post lifts are easier to use and require less precise positioning.
A standard 2-post lift requires a concrete slab at least 4 inches thick with 3,000 PSI compressive strength, and a minimum ceiling height of 11-12 feet for most passenger vehicles. 4-post lifts need similar concrete specs but can work with slightly lower ceilings. Before installation, we assess slab thickness, reinforcement, and any cracks or settling that could affect anchor bolt integrity.
Slow or uneven lifting, visible fluid leaks under the power unit or cylinders, loud noises during operation, and drift (the vehicle slowly lowering when stopped) indicate hydraulic problems. These often result from worn seals, contaminated fluid, or air in the system. Catching these early prevents complete failure and reduces repair costs.
Verify the lift manufacturer is still in business for parts availability, inspect all cables for fraying or rust, check hydraulic cylinders for leaks and scoring, test all safety locks, and confirm the previous owner has maintenance records. Used lifts missing documentation or with unknown service history carry risk. We can perform a pre-purchase inspection to assess condition and estimate any needed repairs before you buy.
